C. S. Karunakaran, widely known as Professor Karunakaran in the
Indian aerospace sector, comes from a middle-class Tamil family in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. He is a
distinguished academician, inventor, aircraft mechanic, drone expert, researcher, techno-commercial
activist, professional body leader, startup coach, and public speaker. A strong advocate for nurturing
and guiding young talent within a robust startup ecosystem, he believes this is essential for
sustainable growth, nation-building, and global technological advancement.
Throughout his career, Professor Karunakaran has mentored numerous successful deep-tech startups in
fields such as drones, satellites, space launch vehicles, edutech, electric vehicles, aviation services,
aerospace, and defense. He has been involved in over 100 product development and maintenance projects,
contributing to innovations such as flying bikes, COVID-19 drone monitoring systems, defense drones,
aircraft structural maintenance, aero engine restoration, and fixed-wing UAV designs. His leadership has
been pivotal in driving key developments in various aerospace forums and professional societies.
One of his significant achievements is the launch of collegiate drone contests through SAEINDIA, which
has fostered innovation among young engineers. During his honorary tenure at the Aeronautical Society of
India (AeSI) Chennai Branch and his leadership role at the Institution of Engineers India Tamil Nadu
State Centre (IEI TNSC), he spearheaded numerous professional and industry development initiatives. His
contributions to the Institute of Aeronautics Astronautics and Aviation (IAAA) have helped transform it
into an active Indian engineering association. With over 150 lectures delivered and more than 40
national and international awards to his credit, Professor Karunakaran’s passion for aerospace is
reflected in his tireless work ethic and innovative mindset.
In July 2023, driven by his love for aircraft and commitment to fostering young talent, Professor
Karunakaran founded Pullinam Aerospace Technologies Private Limited with the support of co-founder and
AI & Data Analytics expert S. B. Shiva Prasath. Under his visionary leadership, the company embarked on
its journey with the goal of manufacturing two-seater pilotless microlight aircraft powered by
electric/IC engine propulsion. Pullinam Aerospace aims to become a key player in the global aviation
market by 2050, focusing on light aircraft, SAF-based solutions, electric aircraft variants, VTOL
(Vertical Take-Off and Landing), CTOL (Conventional Take-Off and Landing), and space tourism. Professor
Karunakaran envisions Pullinam Aerospace as a future leader in delivering aviation solutions to regions
including Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
